Essay / Pedro and Me by Judd Winick - 1765
The graphic novel Pedro and Me by Judd Winick is a tribute to his friend Pedro Zamora, as well as his own story of personal growth. It is an inspiring story that shows the true meaning of friendship and love. It also displays information about HIV/AIDS and how to truly protect yourself from it. Pedro was a young, gay, HIV-positive Cuban-American who spent his time educating people about the disease. They both appeared on MTV's The Real World: San Francisco and chance placed Judd and Pedro in the same room, where they became good friends. The book is about their friendship. Pedro Zamora changed lives by teaching millions of viewers about being gay, living with AIDS and how to overcome it. “The format is engaging, with expansive, vivid images on the page…[while] teaching urgent lessons.” » (Kirkus Reviews). Judd Winick's Pedro and Me conveys information about being gay, living with HIV/AIDS, and how to prevent it, more effectively than other narrative forms through strong visuals, compelling language, and historical accuracy. Pedro and Me is historically accurate because it displays information about AIDS and characters that can be historically proven. AIDS is accurately depicted in this graphic novel through actions that support possible experiences and highlight common truth. HIV and AIDS are diseases that affect a person's immune system. This graphic novel allows the reader to see how AIDS actually affects a person's body and gives the reader an idea of what a person with AIDS would look like. AIDS is caused by HIV. A person may be HIV positive for many years before realizing it. As a person lives with HIV, their immune system gets weaker and weaker, until they eventually contract AIDS. Pedro suffered from the medium of paper and supports my thesis that graphic novels can convey information to readers as well, if not better, than other forms of literature. “The graphic novel is also a great way to teach complex concepts to upper-level students and introduce them to an important postmodern genre.” » (Cohen). Overall, Pedro and Me by Judd Winick effectively conveys important information about HIV/AIDS and the fight against it. Visuals allow the reader to truly understand what the author was trying to convey. Through historical accuracy, strong visuals and compelling language, Judd Winick has depicted a great story of friendship, love and triumph. The fact that Pedro and I was a graphic novel made it even better. The visuals added a whole other aspect to the story. If this were a written novel, the reader would not be able to fully “experience” what they are reading..
