  • Essay / The importance of water on Earth - 796

All matter is made up of atoms and water is no exception. In order to shape molecules, atoms bond or fuse. To shape a water molecule, two hydrogen atoms must bond to a single oxygen atom. This results from the chemical composition of H2O. Water is an extremely unique substance because of its many special properties, the process of how a water molecule is structured, and how they all work together. When a single oxygen atom is bonded by two hydrogen atoms at its top, the molecule resembles the ears (hydrogen atoms) and face (oxygen) of Mickey Mouse. A covalent bond with electrons that do not share equally is a molecule identified as polar. This Mickey Mouse shape of the water molecule provides polarity. This means that overall the water molecules are neutral, but at the same time one end has a negative charge while the other has a positive charge. The oxygen side is negatively charged, while the hydrogen side is positively charged. South poles attracted to north poles in a magnet (two opposites) are very similar to how opposites attract in a water molecule; the negative side is attracted to the positive side of another molecule. The polarity of water causes the “stickiness” that binds molecules together, also known as cohesion. The polarity of water results in the property of cohesion; which is responsible for the ability of water to merge with itself effortlessly. Another resulting property is that of adhesion, which indicates the strong capacity of water to attach itself to other things as well; therefore, on some exteriors, water runs off in a thin layer. Rather than merging into a block, the water flows. Thus, the cohesive forces are overcome by those of the adhesive, after there has been an interaction between the water and the...... middle of paper ......ine incredibly "open" structure » and denser than the liquid state. In doing so, the water expands as it freezes. This is why ice has the ability to float. Regarding the situation where water behaves like the majority of liquids, this would result in changes in the ecosystem. Nevertheless, all forms of underwater life would die in every body of freezable water; which would be frozen from bottom to top. So, the property of water that allows ice to float is crucial to the life of underwater ecosystems, as well as their survival here on planet Earth. All aspects of life on earth are affected by water. In the absence of water, not only would the planet look completely different, but animals would have no oxygen to breathe and plants would not even exist. To maintain a healthy environment as well as human beings, water is an essential resource to have.
