  • Essay / The Myth of Equality - 800

In his article “The Myth of Equality” written in August 2010 on his official blog, Patrick Buchanan, an American conservative political commentator, suggests that equality will never be achievable here in America when it comes to personal skills and abilities (para. 8). He highlights the inequality evident in American professional sports, where only those considered “good” thrive (paras. 6-7). Buchanan reveals that the standardized test given to students proves that there is an educational disparity between racial groups (para. 16). He infers that here in America, because our abilities to perform at something vary, inequalities between racial groups are almost the norm and this is demonstrated in several institutions. One organization where inequality between racial groups is established is that of the American professional sports system. ; where only those who demonstrate excellence in sport flourish. Buchanan interprets statistics reported by columnist Walter Williams to conclude that black male athletes dominate the majority of popular sports such as the NFL and NBA (para. 5). Additionally, Buchanan reveals that no one is complaining that Hispanics and Asians who make up a good percentage of the population are neither visible nor pursued in this organization (para. 2). The enactment of standardized tests given to students to measure their academic abilities and is supposed to narrow the achievement gap and only prove that the battle to end the achievement gap between racial groups is failing. Similarly, New York State test scores reveal a significant academic imbalance between different racial groups (para. 16). For Buchanon, here in America, the notion of equality between racial groups will never be achieved. This is because we as individuals, whether we are academics or athletes, are all different in many ways. We react differently to the situation. There is always some sort of competition that is constantly occurring and it is certainly true that only those who demonstrate excellence will be superior to the rest of the population. Although Patrick Buchanan's essay proves the idea that racial equality in academics is actually a myth, it failed to illustrate other influences that are pushing America toward inequality racial..
