    The rational/market community and the political community differ in that the market community is made up of individuals who only seek their own self-interest when it benefits their family, their friends or themselves. Individuals attempt to acquire goods and services at the lowest possible price while attempting to sell their own goods at the highest price the market will allow. Competition and productivity are the driving forces of individuals in the marketplace and are key elements of society's overall economic success. In the marketplace, there are defined goals based on what best serves the individual's self-interest in the marketplace. In contrast, the political community is a group of individuals concerned with the collective needs of the community and its well-being. . Community goals must be achieved by consensus. The political community cares deeply about the public interest and the collective will of the people. They are made up of members whose membership is predetermined by a set of guidelines. These guidelines determine the roles of members and what they can and cannot do. There can be a number of determining factors such as citizenship, political party affiliation and religious affiliation. Within this community, economic, political and social rights are defined. The public interest in the political community involves putting one's own interests aside for the common good of the community, unless individual interests are shared with the majority of the community. These interests might include the need for good schools, a higher standard of living, or tax cuts. The political community is concerned with the governance of its communities. The rationality model is a concept in which rational decision-making is done by choosing alternatives to achieve one's goals. In the rational model, it is very important that politicians have their goals explicitly in mind. These objectives serve as guidelines for evaluating alternative policy proposals. The model determines whether proposals are worth implementing by analyzing likely outcomes. The model is intended more for analysis and building a list of alternatives using a technique called problem framing. All identified alternatives have the possibility of being chosen, unless the analysis proves otherwise. Ultimately, the desired course of action will need to offer the best possible alternative.
