Essay / Create a sustainable world? - 1099
Creating a Sustainable WorldA small planet is all humanity has to support all of humanity. With over a million chances to destroy everything and just one Earth every day, a simple mistake could potentially ruin everything. Since Earth is a closed system, the human race does not have a second chance to right the mistakes already made. Every choice humanity makes impacts not only the current human population, but also future generations. As Johan Rockstrom says in his Ted Talk, “the planetary risks we face are so great that the status quo is no longer an option” (Rockstrom). The rate at which humanity uses available resources is in no way sustainable. Sustainability is an issue that Rockstrom says is “humanity’s most challenging and exciting decade” (Rockstrom). In order to save the Earth and all life on it, all of humanity must come together to identify how to fix the mistakes made and find solutions to prevent new mistakes from happening again. In order to create a sustainable lifestyle, this current generation must adapt to be more efficient with land, non-renewable resources and energy. Living a sustainable life is not a new idea for humanity. Before the new technological age and the industrial revolution, humans were not capable of living outside of their wants and needs. New technologies have created new demands for more effective and efficient inventions, which has resulted in the creation of new employment opportunities. This has resulted in great advances in food production, distribution, health care, education, communication and much more; however, it was very expensive. As Hennig says, "humanity's demand for goods and services created from our planet's resources stands for a... middle of paper ... and error will ultimately lead to a better, healthier world." Starting with local sustainability, we will eventually expand into sustainability in different cities, then states, until entire nations are self-sustaining. To start with a little local sustainability, we need to focus on more sustainable food sources, community energy businesses, and renewable energy. An example of this was when Eleanor Roosevelt transformed the South Lawn of the White House into a garden, called the Victory Garden. This inspired Americans across the country to create victory gardens, which marked the beginning of urban agriculture and an attempt to live a more sustainable life. This generation needs to find something to spark a new era of sustainability, whether through a public figure or a local person in their hometown. Change will only happen when people inspire themselves and others to make a difference..
