Social influence; it is a term used to describe a person's change in behavior or emotions because of others around that person. Social influence has different types and conformity is one of them. Conformity is best described as a change in an individual's viewpoint or belief to accommodate a particular group of people sharing the same viewpoints. Compliance has three types; compliance, identification and internalization. Conformity is when people conform to the majority but don't actually agree with it. Identification conformity occurs when an individual agrees with certain opinions or behaviors for the purpose of belonging to that particular group with people with similar opinions. Internalization is an entirely different type of compliance than compliance and identification. In this type of conformity, an individual permanently changes their opinions and behavior and it becomes a part of their life. People conform because of two different social influences: normative social influence and informational social influence. In short, normative is when someone conforms because they want to be liked and appreciated by the people around them. Informational social influence occurs when a person gives in to the majority because they want to be right, because they assume that the majority would have the right answer or that they are right about something. In 1956, Asch conducted a study to see if people conformed to group pressure. This study is an example of compliance compliance. 7 male students participated in the experiment. They were given two cards. The first card had a single vertical line and the second had 3 vertical lines...... middle of paper ......the of a "guard". This type of conformity is called identification where people conform to being part of this particular group which here was a group of guards and prisoners. Another study that showed compliance was Sherif's study conducted in 1935. A group of people were placed in a dark room where there was only one screen on which they were on a point that was always in its place although it seems to be moving. This experiment had two parts. In the first, participants were asked individually about the movement of the point, then in groups. It seems that the group had its own standard and this was close to the response of the individuals. Sherif (1935) states that he had demonstrated conformity. Individuals were subject to informational social influence. The study has attracted some criticism. Attendees reportedly changed their minds when Sherif told them he would move the light.3585
