Essay / Peer Relations during Recess: An Informal Observation play • This is a small private school, and I see fifteen to twenty children on the playground. • I see an adult playground instructor, who appears to be allowing the children to facilitate their own play. • The playing field is entirely made of concrete; there are basketball hoops, jungle gyms, swings, red rubber balls, football and basketballs. My first personal observation was of an Asian boy, approximately 5-7 years old.• 11:30am, I notice the young man running towards the playground, he immediately goes towards the red rubber ball. He kicks and tries to dribble the ball for a good minute or two, not caring about anyone around.• 11:32 He stops playing with the ball for a moment, runs to the fence and looks down the street, then comes back running towards the ball and starts dribbling. • 11:33 the playground monitor says something and the kids respond by running towards the monitor, the boy I'm watching continues playing until the playground monitor says something else.• 11:34 a.m., the children started to line up and walk past the playground instructor, who handed them something.• 11:35 a.m. - 11:40 a.m., the young man sat on the ground next to other students and it appears he was eating something.• 11:41 a.m. the young man got up and threw what might have been trash into the trash can and quickly returned to get the red rubber ball.• 11 h:42 - 11:45 the young man was kicking the red ball as if it were a football and a student approached him. It seemed she wanted to play with him. The young boy seemed not to have heard his request and continued playing....... middle of paper ...... interested in knowing if perhaps there was a language barrier between the young man Asian and Latina girl. Perhaps communication was a factor in the young male's lack of cooperation regarding sharing the red ball. I would like to know if there were any family stresses in either household. The strength of observation is that you gain direct access, rather than using some means of self-assessment. The disadvantages of observation are: you must have time and money to conduct a proper study, and you must be careful to record what actually happened, not what you wanted or wanted. hoped to see. In fact, watching the children in action was enlightening for me. , this reinforced the fact that not only are we shaped by family interactions, but we are also shaped socially by our peers and friends, at home, at school and on the playground..
