Essay / Peony Jade - 2075
We have all been in a situation where we immigrated to a new country for different reasons regarding a better future or education. In the book Jade of Peony, Wayson Choy describes the struggle of a Chinese family as they settle in Canada. With its new generation of children born here, the family struggles to keep its children connected to their Chinese customs and traditions as they integrate into this country. new country. Chinese culture needs to be more open-minded because it limits the potential of future generations. The limits of Chinese culture are visible through relationship expectations, education, gender roles and jobs. First, relational expectations in Chinese customs and traditions were strongly ingrained. The daughters of the Chinese family were considered a shame to the family. The sons of the family received more honor than the daughters. Additionally, some girls have even faced discrimination. “If you want a place in this world… don’t be born a little girl” (Choy 27). Girls in Chinese families were considered useless. They have always been looked down upon in a family; they felt that girls could not provide wealth for a family. Chinese society is throwing away its little girls at a staggering rate. For every 100 girls registered at birth, there are 118 baby boys, meaning that nearly one-seventh of China's baby girls go missing (Baldwin 40). Parents from Chinese families believed they had a preference for boys; boys could work and provide family income. Due to Chinese culture's preference for boys, girls were often not allowed to live. In the Chinese ethnic group, the family always obeyed the decision of the eldest. When the family was trying to adapt to the new country and they were trying... middle of paper...... a king in the same domain would do it. Therefore, Chinese culture resists the potential of new generations, due to gender roles and jobs. In conclusion, the ban on Chinese culture is observed by observing relationship expectations, education, gender roles, and jobs. Chinese culture needs to be cultivated more, because it limits the capabilities of the new generation in Canada. In Wayson Choy's book, The Jade of Peony, he describes the struggles of an immigrant Chinese family, as they try to follow two cultures to adapt to a new country like Canada, while clinging to old traditions of China, the children of the family had difficulty keeping up with these two cultures. We have all been in a similar situation where we immigrated to a new country to seek a better future where we have a better lifestyle and education, to help our family grow..
