There are signs that the bars Birnam frequently visits are gay neighborhoods. Birnam plans to go to Jack's house, believing that he is drunk enough to drink and socialize with strangers. Later in the story, he reads the newspaper extract “JACK's—in Charles Street—WHERE GOOD FELLOWS GET TOGETHER” (85). The newspaper clip announcing Birnam's reading announces that all the men are coming together to spend an untold amount of time. The music video is intended to attract the eyes of men and not women, so through both scenes Jack is at a gay bar where Birnam goes when he wants to socialize with other gays.
