  • Essay / Social Work Shadowing Experience - 1345

It started like most visits, with case studies and office work, but what I didn't know was that the social worker who I was supposed to be with was late. , and we were just burning time, so to speak. Once I arrived, my worker said the words I had been waiting for for a month and a half: “Would you like to come visit?” At that very moment, I think my face must have looked like that of a child who had just been told he could have ice cream for dinner. As we drove up the mountain, I was informed of the host family we were visiting as well as the family whose children were being looked after. We also talked about another visit she had planned, but which fell through; this was to take place in a maternity ward. As soon as we knocked on the door, an older woman and the sounds of a little boy jumping and laughing greeted us. We sat and talked about his growth, health and general well-being, all while playing with the little man. Even though he was clumsy and fell often, he just walked and his adoptive parents couldn't be more proud. On the way home, I was told more about his time with this family, as well as his older siblings. It was an incredible thing to see, and I am very grateful to have been able to witness this in particular.
