Essay / Dylan Thomas Research Paper - 1100
It consisted of sixteen poems and seven stories. The stories in this volume had previously been published in periodicals. This collection of works proved to be a commercial failure, but this was attributed to wartime and the fact that the public did not have the funds to purchase the volume. Much to Thomas's dismay, the material in his third publication was described as surreal. Annis Pratt quoted Thomas as saying: “I don't mind where the images in a poem are taken; bring them up, if you wish, from the deepest sea of the hidden self; but, before reaching the paper, they must pass through all the rational processes of the intellect” regarding his work. The works in this volume show that Thomas's mind had begun to think about different things. His work had begun to be written in response to events in his life at the time, such as an argument he had with his wife, the birth of his son, and the death of his son.
