Essay / Friendship in Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" - 774
"We are born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through love and friendship can we create the illusion of the moment when we were not alone" Orson Welles. In this novel, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck focuses on the loneliness of life on a California ranch in the 1930s. One of the most important things in life is to have a friend. Without friends, people will suffer from loneliness like in this novel, not everyone. the novel has the same bond and special friendship as that of George and Lennie. Of Mice and Men is the story of lonely men who travel from ranch to ranch without really communicating with the other ranch employees. Candy, Crooks and Curley's wife were all alone and treated. their loneliness in different ways. Candy coped with her loneliness by being friendly with George and Lennie and becoming partners in getting the small ranch that was George and Lennie's dream. Candy was something of an outcast due to her age difference from the other owners of the ranch. “I could cook and take care of the chickens and hoe the garden a little” (Candy 319). Candy tries to be useful in someone else's life. He heard that George and Lennie dreamed of "living off the fat of the land" as soon as they had enough money. Candy wanted to join us, he offered as much as he could. He wanted to join the dream but not only did he want to join it, he wanted to join George and Lennie's friendship. “Maybe I can give you guys some money” (Candy 325). Candy offered the money he gets from the government for his disability. An exchange for money Candy gets a friendship from it. So he pays George and Lennie to actually be friends with him. I think money will never buy true friendship. Not only was Candy alone and miserable trying to deal with her loneliness, but so was Crooks... middle of paper... ey's wife is truly alone. Aren't you supposed to be happy when you're married? Yet she is still unhappy and alone. Candy, Crook's wife and Curley were all alone and they handled it in a unique way to feel alone. I think one of the most important lessons from the novel is friendship and social interactions with other human beings are very important and we should all be grateful for that because it keeps us away from loneliness. I remember a time when I was alone and I couldn't stand it. When my mother and the family went to the store for a while to shop. I felt like I was going to explode, it wasn't just a few minutes, it felt like days. From the second they walked through the door where I was greeting them, they thought I was eccentric. They kept asking, “Are you okay?” It was about an hour, I don't want to see if it was for a week.
