Essay / The irrationality of the human sciences and its effects on a utopian...
The human psyche is divided into rational and irrational drives. Courtesy of Sigmund Freud, it is divided into id, ego and superego. According to Freud, although the superego controls the other two to present us in a rational state within society, the id often tends to escape the full control of consciousness, making it an unconscious action. For Freud, it is the recognition that the irrational is there, that it must be controlled to gain the upper hand. Man's aggressive nature tends to dominate the mind, leading to irrational actions. Freud's Civilization and its Discontents and Dostoyevsky's Notes from the Underground show how humans are controlled by their irrational impulses and, therefore, attempts to create a utopian society are futile. To have a different view of the irrational actions of humans, a cinematic frame of reference was introduced, Joss Whedon's science fiction film, Serenity, tells the story of a civilization controlled by aggressive groups, the Alliance and the Reavers. The two factions take the form of an antagonistic society, fostering a sense of fear in all who oppose or stand in their way. Actions aimed at making a civilized society utopian lead to the creation of a dystopia due to man's irrational impulses. Through his writings and research, Freud emphasized that man was initially motivated by his irrational impulses, particularly his aggressiveness. The aggression he was referring to belonged to man's primitive instincts. Freud's established views and philosophies diverged from previous Enlightenment ideologies on the rationality of the mind. Freud's ideas contradicted "the essential goodness and rationality of the individual" and sided with the idea that the human mind was driven by "irrati...... middle of paper . .....id, and symbolized the universe in its entirety. be a dystopian society. Thus conclude that actions aimed at making a civilized society utopian lead to dystopian reactions due to man's irrational impulses. This statement is supported by examples from the film Serenity, as well as theoretical analyzes by Freud and Dostoyevsky. Works CitedDostoyevsky, Fyodor. Metro Notes. Lawall 1250-1327.Freud, Sigmund.
