    Many women suffer psychological and emotional difficulties after an abortion. “A recent study found that more than eighty-five percent of women who had an abortion reported at least one negative reaction to the abortion, such as grief, sorrow, regret, or disappointment. About thirty-five percent reported five or more negative reactions. Up to ten percent of women surveyed developed “serious psychiatric complications.” (Birthmothers, 2013) After having an abortion, women are at higher risk of developing long-term clinical depression. They are also more likely to develop anxiety. Women are also more likely to start using drugs and alcohol after an abortion. Some other emotional and psychological risks for women who have had an abortion include, but are not limited to: regret, anger, guilt, shame, feelings of loneliness or isolation, loss of self-confidence, depression, anxiety, insomnia or nightmares, eating disorders, relationship and sexual difficulties, repeat abortions, smoking, suicidal thoughts or feelings and post-abortion stress syndrome (PASS). Abortion can also cause difficulty functioning normally, such as maintaining a job, attending school, maintaining family responsibilities, abuse of other children, escapist behavior, irritability , outbursts of anger and violent behavior.
