Essay / The Canadian Magazine Dispute in the United States
Magazines are nevertheless an important medium today and served the same purpose as early as the 1730s. Magazines are periodical publications containing articles and illustrations that usually cover particular areas or topics of interest. This source or media is available in countries all over the world and in the case of the 21st century, it is easily available everywhere on the Internet. Magazines were most popular in the 19th century, however, and these were primarily American magazines. Publications of the American magazine are distributed in many countries around the world. And Canada is surely the closest country, directly north of the United States. Canada has received and continues to receive a substantial amount of imported magazines for America, and it is enthusiastic Canadian customers who keep this business going, but Canada has a problem with all the foreign media made available to its population. The dispute over Canadian magazines is the result of one of the most significant conflicts over cultural concerns. The Canadian Committee on Mass Media concluded that this was not one of Canada's first attempts to protect its culture from the domination of its neighbor. America being much larger can also appear as a threat to the much smaller country in the North. Canada imposed protective tariffs on foreign magazines in the 1920s and banned the importation of split-run editions of magazines published abroad in 1965. These measures, in my opinion, are strictly economic and financial rather as the result of cultural concerns. My impression is that the dispute over Canadian magazines was not motivated by a genuine desire to protect Canadian culture. The fact that only eleven... media... have their magazines considered national. They applied the taxes in such a way that foreign publishers only have to pay the taxes, but that is also unfair. This dispute over Canadian magazines does not stop there, but it has actually created disputes over Canadian trade. Since the Canadian economy decided to impose taxes on foreign content, magazine publishers are expected to produce magazines with at least eighty percent Canadian content. I think the idea of imposing taxes is wrong to begin with and American magazine producers have also imposed fees based on taxes. They voted that the taxes imposed on foreign producers constitute a measure of discriminatory practice. This dispute began with the notion of a desire to preserve Canadian culture, but has escalated to the point of creating an extremely large trade war between the two countries..
