He was able to disprove the belief system of that time by using early frogs as test subjects. After working on frogs, Helmholtz turned to human subjects. Through his research, he was able to demonstrate "that the conduction velocity was not instantaneous, suggesting that thought and movement follow each other at a measurable interval and do not occur simultaneously, as previously thought" (Schultz, DP , & Schultz, SE, 2012, p.57). The only problem with Helmholtz's research was that there were differences in reaction times between the test subjects, and Helmholtz himself was only interested in the duration itself (Schultz, DP and Schultz, SE, 2012). Due to reaction time problems, Helmholtz eventually abandoned his research. The research was then reviewed and repeated. Helmholtz was a scientist and focused on practical knowledge and research. His experiments, although practical, would open the way to a new psychology which would be born with the arrival of Wilhelm Wundt and would help future
