Psychodynamic approach Sigmund Freud's theory of personality was the first and main influence for the development of psychodynamic perspectives. Freud discussed instincts, anxiety and defense mechanisms, personality levels, personality structure, and a child's psychosexual development. Freud believed that childhood experiences would affect later life. Freud's psychotherapy is called psychoanalysis. After Freud's personality theory was developed by neo-Freudians like Carl Jung and Alfred Adler, Anna Freud. Carl Jung focused on the ego, the personal and collective unconscious, extroversion and introversion, and archetypes. Alfred Adler presented the ideas of the superiority complex, social interest, psychological types, defective lifestyles, and birth order. Freud's theory of psychoanalysis has been criticized because Freud used case studies and client experiences to explain the theory; Freud failed to prove the theory by a scientifically acceptable method and to maintain verified and accurate data. Researchers have found that not all children have had a sexual experience as a child. In modern psychology, Freud's psychoanalytic method is lightly used by therapists. because understanding the client's history and feelings helps the therapist decide the client's mental state. Therapists allow clients to talk about their past experiences, people related to the client, and their dreams to expose the client's mind. (Hook nd). For example: in the 20th century, psychoanalysis was used in 20 to 30% of therapies related to mental disorders. (Tuckett/Psychology, the science of mind and behavior “The science of psychology”, 2005 cited in Passer and Smith 2001: 9). Jung's methods of analysis are middle of paper......explain the freedom and personal growth of a human being and called the third force of psychology. Client-centered therapy was proposed by Carl Roger. The major concept of Roger's theory is the “self”. Roger developed the concept of the fully functioning person and believed that good communication between client and therapist was the basis of therapy. Abraham Maslow focused on the positive side of human mental health and used the hierarchy chart to explain human needs, Figure 2: Humanistic psychology has been classified in Division 32 of the American Psychological Association (APA nd ). Client-centered theory is used in expensive art therapy to express and release human emotions. (Rogers 1993). Many people have benefited from the support of client-centered therapy to share their feelings and ideas with the therapist and find a solution to problems. (Sammons nd.).
