Patient safety indicators are those indicators that contribute to providing safe care. Patient safety indicators must always be measurable. Nurses and healthcare professionals play a vital role in promoting and maintaining patient safety and quality of care in the workplace. The patient has the right to receive appropriate and safe health care from the health care team. Nurses are highly responsible for improving health care as well as preventing and managing patient safety indicators by providing patient-centered care and evidence-based practice. There are different patient safety indicators such as nosocomial infections, falls, medication errors, pressure sores, transfusion reactions, etc. These must be avoided, diagnosed early and managed appropriately by the healthcare team to ensure patient safety. Here I am going to discuss one of the patient safety indicators which is Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) and it is one of the most common hospital acquired infections among others. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is defined as the infection in any of the structures of the urinary tract such as the kidneys, ureter, bladder, and urethra (Balenine 2016). Urinary tract infection caused in any hospital or health center or linked to any therapeutic treatment is called nosocomial urinary tract infection (Lacovelli et al., 2014). As a nurse, we must be aware of the causes, risk factors and complications of catheterization-associated nosocomial infections. As it has been found in various surveys and researches that catheter-associated urinary tract infection is one of the most common and frequent types of nosocomial infections due to various risk factors and causes, we must follow the lines guidelines and strategies for the prevention and management of these infections. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are the patient safety indicator through which we can improve healthcare and provide safe, quality care to patients. Nurses have a vital role to play in improving the health care system, which is possible by following the principles and guidelines of patient assessment, monitoring and nursing management..
