Essay / The Pros and Cons of Online Dating - 1456
The results suggest that, generally, the lower the attractiveness of online dating, the greater the likelihood that individuals will increase their profile pictures and provide falsified information regarding their physical characteristics. However, individuals only changed aspects regarding physical appearance; they were less likely to lie about things like income, hobbies and occupation. Since online dating does not allow for nonverbal cues, much information communicated can be easily changed; this leaves room for more deceptive behavior (Toma and Hancock 2010). Studies have also shown that 20% of Internet users actually admitted to using online deception, but 90% of them felt like other people were lying (Epstein, 2007). This illustrates the phenomenon that individuals may not reveal their personal deceptions; however, it is easier for them to speculate on the deception of others. Even though there are many opportunities to find potential partners through online dating, participants are not sure who they are meeting and talking to, so they are more likely to believe that online dating is potentially full of false information (Toma, Hancock and Ellison). , 2008). Online dating is based on what an individual posts on their profile, so it's easy to stretch the truth to get first contact.
