Essay / The History of Entertainment - 1452
Since the dawn of man, entertainment has been a close second to food, water, and shelter on our list of priorities. When early humans hunted and gathered in the Great Rift Valley, they passed time by telling stories and drawing on cave walls. Not only were these early forms of entertainment, but they were also important in transmitting history and cultural values. Many other forms of entertainment can relate to other aspects of history, such as sports, politics, theater and art. Entertainment is often the motivation behind the greatest shows in history. The Roman Colosseum, one of the 7 wonders of the world, was built to host large events that could accommodate thousands of spectators. Even today's laptops, computers, and cell phones are used for entertainment purposes. But all these inventions stem from a common goal; entertainment. Although the ancient Egyptians built one of the most successful empires in history, the ordinary Egyptian enjoyed entertainment just as we do today. They celebrated with banquets, acrobats and exotic dancers. The funeral was a particularly important event because of the Egyptians' belief in the importance of death and the afterlife. Huge celebrations marked the passage of someone's soul into the other world. These lavish celebrations were usually reserved for the rich and noble. The food was served in intricately decorated cups, bowls and plates. Three thousand year old jugs of wine and beer have been found in Egypt by archaeologists and are believed to be popular drinks at celebrations. The banquets also included music and dancing. Men and women danced and excited the crowd while musicians played harps, lyres and lutes. Most of the festivities – secular and religious – entertained the guests with many different types...... middle of paper ...... and no matter how different the entertainments are today, they don't only change even more over time. The technology we currently call “modern” will soon become outdated and obsolete. However, even the most advanced entertainment technologies of the future can be traced back to their original roots, even though they began with stories told by early humans 10,000 years ago. http://www.cwu.edu/~robinsos/ppages/resources/Theatre_History/Theahis_2.htm http://www.ancientgreece.com/s/Olympics/ http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/roman_entertainment. htm http://www.buzzle.com/articles/entertainment-in-medieval-times.html http://www.lordsandladies.org/jousting.htm http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art39866.asp http://www.poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/122 http://www.leisureandculturedundee.com/library/lamb19thcent
