Robert Frost is one of America's most famous and popular poets of all time. He won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry four times and presented a poem at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy. The various events in Frost's life, including his family relationships, education, and various professional experiences, significantly affected his works such as "The Road Not Taken," "Knowing the Night," and "Out, Out." really affected his work, “Knowing the Night.” He married his wife, Elinor Miriam White, in 1895 and had six children. Unfortunately, he lost his daughter to fever and his wife died of a heart attack after four years. Followed by unpleasant events, his only son, Carol Frost, committed suicide shortly after. The time Frost wrote this poem was during World War II after the Great Depression (McDougal Littell). Frost suffered from depression and doubt after the tragic event sequences. It was certainly a terrible time for Frost, and the poem “Knowing the Night” truly demonstrates his complex feeling and indescribable loneliness. In the poem, Frost does not mention that the speaker is alone. However, he describes it using imagery: “I walked in the rain and came back in the rain. I have passed the farthest town” (1-2). Readers can understand that the speaker is trying to distance himself from society, and the word "rain" adds darkness to the mood of the poem. It describes the environment by appealing to five senses such as the “sound of feet”, “interrupted cry”, “rain” and “light”. All the sentences and words help create a clear and vivid picture of the speaker and his surroundings and allow readers to feel sympathy for Frost and his complex feelings after losing...... in the middle of paper......, he saw the incident and used the poem to criticize the way people lived at that time. The various events in Robert Frost's life really have a great impact on his poems, including "Knowing the Night", "The Road Not Taken", and "Out." His relationships with his family, his education and his experiences professionals played an important role in his inspiration. Frost is certainly one of the greatest American poets of all time.
