After reading the account of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American slave, it is clear to see the true horrors behind the entirety of slavery. It's one thing to learn about it in a textbook or attend a conference, but it's a completely different experience to hear about how inhumane, scary, and terrible slavery was from someone one who experienced the terrors with his own eyes. . Reading this account provided extremely descriptive details of how slaves were actually treated. Douglass recounted the time when he often: "was awakened at dawn by the most heartbreaking screams of one of my aunts, whom he used to tie to a joist and whip on her back naked until she was completely asleep. literally covered in blood. No words, no tears, no prayers from his bloody victim seemed to turn his iron heart from his bloody purposeā¦[he remembered] the first time [he] had witnessed this horrible exhibition. [He] was a child, but [he] remembers it very well. (7) Douglass was certainly not alone in experiencing this among his family members, friends, and even himself....
