In return, the Indians befriended the United States government. Also in this treaty it gives the government the right to build roads and have military posts on its territory. In exchange, the government will protect Indian land. In 1887, the general law on subdivision was put in place. The General Land Grant Act divided reservation lands and was divided for individual Indians. The goal was to establish Indians as individual landowners and farmers so that they could assimilate into white society. More than 90 million acres of land were confiscated from Indians.
