  • Essay / Summary of Before We Were Free By Julia Alvarez

One day, he sends flowers to Anita's sister, and immediately she flees to the United States so as not to be hurt by El Jefe. After many nights of her father, her uncle and their "friends" talking seriously outside Anita's bedroom window, she discovers that they are the ones trying to kill El Jefe! Anita always admired El Jefe because she thought he was supposed to be a good leader and somewhat of a god to them, so this news upset her. This part of history shows how bad a dictatorship can become. Anita's father and others disliked him so much that they hatched a plan to murder him. It is frightening to think that people would rather assassinate their leader than leave their own country. I think this is why Anita's father wanted to stay while part of their family was moving out of the country. I wonder though if the country you live in is a dictatorship is it much more difficult for a person to emigrate? I think the dictator would be angry with them for leaving his country. But then again, I'm not an expert on the subject.
