Essay / Citizen Kane - 1075
Orson Welles is a legend in his own right. He is a dedicated director, actor and artist. An artist in the sense that he directed, produced and starred in the film “Citizen Kane”. The film won the award for best screenplay co-written by Welles. “Citizen Kane” highlights many social issues between countries, relationships, but also between competing media companies. The film caused great controversy when it was first released with a delay (due to personal terms with W.R. Hearst). This highlights how a newspaper should respond and also highlights the corruption of politics. War was breaking out in Europe and throughout the film, Kane declares that there will be no war. He ignores the fact that people are being killed, tortured and rounded up like cattle because of Adolf Hitler. The film was released on May 1, 1941, a few days before Joseph Stalin became prime minister of Russia, a day before the Nazis took over the Netherlands, and eight days before the English army broke the codes Germans. The film begins with a single word, 'Rosebud.' The audience who just watched the film has no idea what this word means. In the opening music, many parallels can be seen. This includes images superimposed on images, images that digress from other images, and images that conflict with other images. Throughout the film, you have these parallels not only with the shots, but also with the actual people and characters. Privacy is not private at all. If you are an important figure in the world, people clearly have access to you and your life. This goes hand in hand with Kane's life. From his childhood, he did great things and his life was publicized by his guardian. This is very important in the scheme of things because after Kane's second wife divorced him, he became a recluse and people were curious as to what he was doing in Xanadu..
