  • Essay / The Night That Changed My Life - 860

The Night That Changed My LifeThe darkness of the night covered the cabin and the landscape like a mother and her newborn child. The winter snow on the ground illuminated the light of the moon and made it very easy to see into the distance, but there was nothing to see; for miles and miles, tall pines and rolling terrain held nothing but Mother Nature. I lay silently in bed and watched out the window as the snow fell methodically to the ground. The tall pines watched over the cabin and their shadows seemed to have lives of their own. The howling wind occasionally caused screams and groans from the old wooden door. I was alone in my cabin except for the intense cold, which repeatedly forced me to grab my blanket as she nipped at my exposed body. I trembled and my teeth began to chatter as I read my newspaper by candlelight. As I started reading, I came across an article about a madman who escaped from a Maine prison. I looked at the photo and for some reason I thought I knew this man, but in reality I knew I didn't. I continued reading while trying to pass the time, as I awaited the arrival of my girlfriend, Michelle, who, like me, was looking for an escape from this harsh world. This isolated location in northern Maine offered great privacy and rarely welcomed visitors. I patiently stayed awake and waited for a knock at my door. Suddenly, without warning, the candle went out and an indescribable chill passed through my body. I quickly got up to relight the candle, but quickly realized I was out of matches. I hesitated to move, I hesitated to breathe, but then there was a knock at my door and my heart suddenly dropped into my stomach. BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. I stood frozen in the middle of the room like a deer caught in car headlights. I practically crawled to the door to see who it was. I prayed after each step that it would be Michelle, but for some reason I knew it wasn't. I walked towards the door and remained silent, almost as if I was waiting for this person on the other side to open the door before me, but they didn't. I searched for the handle in the dark, but I don't need to find it.
