  • Essay / The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill - 1467

Many companies that sell seafood have had to reduce their sales in recent months. Since April, businesses have once again been selling the shellfish on the menu at a rather reasonable price. A major incident occurred just two days before Earth Day. The incident is well known as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, or as many others call it, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig along the Gulf of Mexico is an oil spill resulting from an explosion contracted by BP, resulting in the spill of more than a million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. This incident gave rise to much controversy. The arguments being discussed are whether or not we should continue drilling offshore, what exactly went wrong, and why none of the failsafes were able to activate. British Petroleum (“BP”) is the company blamed for the incident. Employing 80,000 people, BP is an international oil company that uses different technologies to find oil and gas beneath the Earth's surface. One of the oil rigs, Deepwater Horizon, drilled 35,000 feet, making it the deepest oil and gas drilling (Walsh). Deepwater Horizon was drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, about 52 miles southeast of Venice on the tip of Louisiana. After the explosion, helicopters searched for 11 missing crew members. 17 people were injured (BP internal investigation team). A day later, the rig was found upside down (BP Oil Spill Timeline). The cost of cleaning up the damage is approximately $760 million (Walsh). This is not the first time BP has been at fault. They have criminal convictions in places like Alaska's Endicott Bay, Texas City and Prudhoe Bay. Jeanne Pascal was part of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and was responsible for looking after BP. Pascal watched over companies like BP which were threatened with exclusion. Under his leadership, BP was charged with four federal crimes. Over the past twelve years, Pascal has considered BP behaviors to be faults. She attempted to warn the government about BP's safety and environmental problems that would most likely lead to another disaster. While she monitored BP, the company misinformed and misled her about things that resulted in the crimes she committed. Sensing that some things were wrong at the company, she presented a case of unsafe work environments..
