Big Life, REVIEW« The play/musical is about a group of black people coming from the Caribbean islands to England, in search of a better standard of living and, with a little luck, a good job. and settle there. The play simply explains what different people had to endure and what their lives became like after arriving in England. It shows how they resist women, how they fight racism and how they try to realize their ambitions in England. It takes place in the 1950s, where the country was very white dominated and English people were not used to being around people of other cultures. It’s a very touching musical comedy; with a little comical side, added by Ms. Aphrodite, an audience member, speaking about her own experiences in the 1950s. Full of life and music, and very engaging! SYNOPSIS: The Big Life begins with all the men and Sybil arriving in England. Sybil and Bernie, who are engaged, break up because Bernie thinks she was flirting with another man. The men all decide together to make a pact. This means they will stop using things like cigarettes and alcohol; sleep only 4 hours a night; I fast once a week and have no relations with women, and bet £5 with the admiral that they will stick to what they say. The next scene takes place in the B&B, where Zulieka, Mary and Kathy are sitting and doing odd jobs, when Sybil enters. She tells them about how she broke up with Bernie, and the women all decide they want nothing to do with men anymore. Meanwhile, the men are on a subway looking for a place to stay, and someone mentions the B&B, but Bernie says he'd rather sleep on the street. They finally decide to go there and find rooms. Women continue to talk about the uselessness of men. Then at Piccadilly Circus, the Admiral and Jacqueline the prostitute are sitting eating crisps, when Lennie and Dennis enter, complaining about how they still haven't found a job and how rude people are to them. The Reverend enters and begins to preach, and the Admiral is insulted as he feels that he is implying that he is playing the devil's music, so plays louder. The congregation begins to sing and Lennie and Dennis argue. In the B&B, Bernie enters in his new postman's uniform and Sybil comes out. Zulieka explains that the other man she was talking to was one of her uncles. Ferdy and Zulieka discuss his book and some memories.
