Essay / Polykleitos of Argos Art Analysis - 841
All artists are influenced by or incorporate issues and events of their time and place into their works. This statement is confirmed by many artists such as Polycleitos (5th century BC), Michelangelo (1475-1564) and the father of Cubism, Picasso (1881-1973). Although some may be less influenced or be one of the creators/fathers of their arts, all artists follow this statement because the time and place they were born from helped shape the artists. Polykleitos of Argos, was a renowned ancient Greek sculptor from the 5th century BC. He was considered by many to be one of the most important sculptors of his time. During its century, Greece experienced many wars (e.g. the Persian War) and quickly became one of the greatest powers in the world. The Greeks recognized that the nude male figure represented strength, power, and everything that was important in the perfect Greek man. Many of Polykleitos' works reflect this idea of masculine perfection and were therefore usually displayed in public spaces to remind the Greek people of masculine perfection. His work Doryphorus is presented as highly masculine and properly proportioned to further show masculine perfection. Polykleitos' works, however, were ahead of his time as he was one of the fathers of what is today recognized as classical Greek style. His works incorporated contraopposto (the sculpture places one leg forward to represent movement) in an attempt to emphasize the athleticism and strength of the male figure. Another of his works (Apollo of Mantua) reflects the beliefs of ancient Greek civilization. Apollo is in Greek mythology the messenger God and is therefore sculpted to once again show what the Greeks believed to be masculine perfection. The sculptor is depicted as fierce, well-built and...... middle of paper ......d the Analytical Cubist movement. During World War II, Picasso stayed in France under the Nazi regime but his artistic style did not correspond to that of the Nazi artistic ideal. Although Picasso continued to paint, he did not exhibit during this period. Picasso's works were commonly exhibited and enjoyed great fame, although many disagreed with his style. Overall, Picasso's works reflect those of his era, as the creation of the camera led to a new artistic movement that is still respected to this day. Ultimately, it can be seen that all artists are influenced by or incorporate the issues and events of their time into their works, whether from the desire to depict Greek perfection to that of religious beliefs and the creation of camera. To become famous like Polyclitus, Michelangelo and Pablo Picasso, one must follow this statement.
