    Book Review: The Bottom BillionThe Bottom Billion: Why the Poorest Countries Fail and What Can Be Done About It says a lot about global poverty. Extensive research is provided throughout the book to illustrate that change must come from countries that are recently at the bottom of the pyramid in order to bring about change and difference in society. The world is made up of 5 billion people who are well off or quickly getting there and a billion people who are even further behind (Collier). Collier's thesis explores why improvised countries fail to progress despite aid and support and why many occupying countries have experienced poor financial stability and growth in recent years. As a result, the author wrote this book to state the evidence that less developed countries are experiencing decline due to increased poverty due to economic flaws. Collier's main arguments in The Bottom Billion address four pitfalls: conflict, natural resources, landlockedness, and poor governance of how countries remain stuck in poverty (Collier). The first trap mentioned is civil war and the reason why conflicts have gradually concentrated in the lower part of Africa. Collier points out that nearly three-quarters of those in the bottom billion have recently gone through, or are still in the midst of, civil war, pestilence, and ignorance that co-exist with the 14th century (Collier, 3). The reason this happened was not due to the legacy of colonialism, income inequality, or political repression of minorities, but due to internal conflict (Ferguson). Collier argues that three elements increase the risk of conflict: a relatively high proportion of young and uneducated men; an imbalance between ethnic groups... middle of document ...... natural resources such as food, water and energy.
