  • Essay / Leadership Discussion Paper - 783

Authenticity and trust go hand in hand. If I talk about how one of my ideals is for everyone to lift each other up, I can't talk behind someone's back and say how bad their job is. Even if that person never finds out what I said, the person I told now sees that I didn't stay true to that ideal and has probably lost confidence in myself as a leader. They may think I will do the same thing behind their back or tell others how I acted against my values. As the leader of a specific group, I must ensure that everyone's values align with mine. Although we will never have the same beliefs about everything, our core values must be consistent. Deciding early what these values are is crucial to our success. If someone has a belief that contrasts with that of the rest of the group, they will either be unhappy throughout the process, or they will even test the strength of the group by pulling everyone in the opposite direction from where we were going. They will cause the group to backtrack, likely wasting valuable time.
