  • Essay / Review of Nurse-Patient Communication - 733

Literature Review This literature review reviews Catherine McCabe's article, Nurse-Patient Communication: An Exploration of Patient Experiences (McCabe, 2002). She has earned numerous healthcare-related degrees (Registered General Nurse, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Registered Nurse Educator, and Master of Nursing). She has many years of experience and currently teaches at the Trinity Center for Health Sciences. As stated in the title, this study will examine patient interactions with nurses in relation to their communication. This study used a qualitative approach, as outlined in the article, by examining the life experiences of the participants. IntroductionThe introductory paragraph provides information about communication and its impact on patient-nurse relationships. It allows the reader to understand what true communication entails and how it is a fundamental part of nursing and the skills that all nurses need. It encourages those who wish to provide quality nursing care to continue reading. Showing us the importance of communication in study. Limitations of this study could be seen in the size of the participant group. Another limitation would be if only participants from one institution were interviewed. Conclusion/Implications for Future ResearchThis study showed that nurses can communicate well when a patient-centered approach is used. There is a need in health care for nurses to recognize that patients are more than a task to be done. That the patient himself is an important part of his own care. By educating nurses and providing them with available evidence-based research, they can fill this gap. Continued research needs to be conducted into patients' experiences of how nurses communicate. Show us the behaviors that patients highly value. Thus allowing nurses to use a patient-centered approach
