  • Essay / Cause of Deforestation in Nigeria - 1572

Everyone needs to breathe to live, including plants and animals. Trees and plants help regulate the carbon cycle. When trees absorb carbon dioxide from the environment, they release it as oxygen. When trees are cut down, the carbon cycle is interrupted and there is no exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, causing carbon dioxide levels to increase. When this happens, carbon dioxide moves into the atmosphere and is stored there as a greenhouse gas. “However, deforestation still remains the second cause of greenhouse gas emissions, just behind industrial emissions” (Culas). Greenhouse gases disrupt the normal regulation of weather. When the greenhouse captures and stores heat, problems arise. When carbon dioxide levels in greenhouse gases increase, atmospheric conditions become unstable, causing global warming. Global warming is the increase in the Earth's temperature, mainly caused by the greenhouse effect. Global warming manifests itself by affecting the environment by causing droughts, floods, changes in the ecosystem, decrease in available fresh water and other environmental problems. Trees play an important role in not only keeping the soil rich, regulating the water table, providing a stable anchor to the soil to reduce soil erosion, and providing nutrient-rich soil for agriculture, but they contribute also to the absorption of carbon emissions in the atmosphere..
