Coeducational schools reflect the diversity of society and promote the fight against sexism. As such, they are progressive because they help society forget its initial suffering. On the other hand, Pahlke, Bigler, and Patterson argue that single-sex schools are a step backwards for society since they remind society of its past where only men were allowed access to a modest education (265). Separating female students can bring up a painful past and lead to poor academic performance. Additionally, the continued creation of same-sex schools could affect the progress already made.
