  • Essay / Mccandless and Christopher Mccandless - 1036

Herbert Otto, an esteemed author, once wrote: "Change and growth take place when a person has taken risks and dares to get involved in experimenting with his own life” (Wilderdom: A Project in Natural Life and Transformation). Essentially, Otto is saying that to grow as a person and educate yourself, one must free oneself from that which brings one comfort, which allows one to be bold and adventurous. Christopher McCandless has a similar view on education, experimentation or adventure, which can be seen in Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild. McCandless believes that once people find a way to break free from the default, comfortable framework that so many of us operate on, will we be able to discover our adventurousness? Krakauer writes that McCandless “consumed fewer calories than he burned” (188). The other possible sequence of events is that McCandless was poisoned by ingesting potato seeds containing solanine, "a poison found in plants in the nightshade family that causes vomiting, diarrhea, headaches and short-term lethargy, and negatively affects'. heart rate and blood pressure if ingested over a prolonged period” (190). However, what happened next is highly unlikely given that McCandless would have had to consume an incredibly high number of said seeds. According to Krakauer, “…given the light weight of his bag when Gallien put it down, it is extremely unlikely that he was carrying more than a few grams of potato seeds…” (190). Over the years, other explanations have been put forward, but there is no conclusive evidence as to how he actually died. McCandless' body was found in the abandoned bus of Gordon Samel, an employee at an auto body shop in Anchorage, on September 6, 1992, two and a half weeks after the death of Christopher McCandless. In addition to finding McCandless' body, a couple from Anchorage, Alaska, found a "disturbing note" taped to the bus door (12). The note read: “SOS, I need your help. I'm injured, close to death and too weak to get out of here. I'm all alone, it's not a joke. In the name of God, stay to save me. I'm picking berries nearby and will return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August?”
