  • Essay / Hunger: It's Not a Game - 1442

Today, most people enjoy food. Sometimes the leftovers are thrown away and become waste. Students don't see this aspect of the fact that there are a lot of hungry people all over the country. As this tragedy continues, many nonprofit organizations are supporting, helping, and fighting this hunger across the country. There are a few examples of nonprofit organizations fighting hunger in America, such as Feeding America, Project Bread, Huff Project, and Huff Site. In Anchorage, there is also a non-profit organization that fights hunger. The Alaska Food Bank and Bean's Café are just the two major organizations fighting hunger in Anchorage. The Alaska Food Bank has a partnership with Feeding America while Bean's Café does not. Both organizations started in 1979, but Bean's Café is the one that stands out, making the organization well known to area residents. For 34 years, Bean's Café has fed hungry people in Anchorage, Alaska. The goal is for no one to go hungry anymore. Behind these 34 years of success, it all started when Bean and his mother bought their first truck, a Ford with a blue pickup truck. Bean and his mother named him Tucker. Once upon a time, Bean and his mother decided to go on an adventure. They drove from Boston to Alaska. For this long car adventure, Bean only has toys, books, drawing tablets, pencils and lots of pillows on the mattress he and his mother slept on during the adventure. When they were hungry, Bean would open the sliding windows, lean toward the front of the truck and announce, "Bean's Café is open for business!" Can I take your order? (Bean, 1997). During this time of Bean's play, everything started to become a reality. Her mother grew to love Anchorage, and at first glance there is no such place as street people to eat, rest, read, shower, watch TV, make phone calls or just relax. In 1979, Bean's mother spoke to dozens of people to develop her ideas and after that, she signed a five-year lease for a small empty warehouse downtown, across from the Sheraton Hotel. The next day, people started putting all their efforts into building this Bean's Café. After that, people start coming to eat, rest, organize and donate. As Bean's Café began to grow, they recognized the lack of attention to children in need and suffering from hunger..
