  • Essay / The Classical Film Grease - 1638

Watch the classic film Grease and you will understand how relationships work in Western society. The film tells the story of a boy (Danny) and a girl (Sandy) who fall in love. Following a series of misunderstandings, they grow apart, but still care about each other. Through ballads such as Summer Night, still popular today, the film shows how men and women view relationships differently. Movies like Grease are like a mirror, reflecting societal values and the way it socializes its members. It clearly shows that in relationships, men are socialized to view relationships as a primarily physical and sexual endeavor, while women view them as a perpetual bond – a deeper connection between the two individuals within a relationship. It's tempting to believe that when a couple says they are "in love," that they see their love in the same way - that they have successfully "defined their relationship." But it turns out that love is in the eye of the beholder. Researchers on heterosexual love have found that the definition of love changes depending on the gender of the party. According to surveys, men were more likely to score higher on romanticism scales and more likely to recognize their romantic feelings earlier than women (Kanin et al. p. 64). Since men tend to recognize romantic feeling earlier, for men to be considered "more romantic", the definition must be based on how quickly romantic feeling is recognized (Kanin et al. p. 71) . Females are much more careful and judicious when attributing their reactions to love (Kanin 70). This may have developed due to the evolutionary history of our species. Men have less parental investment than women. The animals strive to reproduce their species and the downside...... middle of paper......the end of Grease Sandy and Danny and Sandy get back together, apparently repairing their misunderstandings about their relationship. They all do this over a ballad that is still one of the standards of today's culture. You are the one I want. But despite this reconciliation, there is still a misunderstanding between the two of them. Sandy dresses much more sensually only to have Danny tell her throughout the song that he "needs to get in shape", because she needs to be true to her heart. Ultimately, Danny is attracted to her primarily for her physical qualities, and Sandy obviously sees potential in him to satisfy her needs and desires. They are still in love, but despite the notion of "true love", they both see it completely differently. Men still view relationships as primarily physical and sexual, and women as a means to satisfy their needs and those of their possible offspring..
