The symbolic use of color in BelovedIn the novel Beloved, Toni Morrison uses color to show the reactions of some of the main characters. Color represents a lot of things in the book. Freedom is an example because once free, the slaves noticed the beautiful colors everywhere. They see that the world is not just black and white and two different races, there are many beautiful things that have gone unnoticed. When Baby Suggs was free, she was able to spread happiness and joy throughout the community. When the community did not accept her, she fell into depression, but she still enjoys freedom, in a different way, more alone than with the others. It was when she wanted to see bright colors. She loved color. During his trip north, Paul D. was asked to follow the flowers. The flowers are known to be beautiful, bright plants. Many colors symbolize Paul D.'s path to freedom. Morrison uses colors such as orange, lavender, and pink in Beloved to represent freedom. She uses red to represent death. Baby Suggs, Sethe, Denver and Paul D have all had experiences where intense colors have warned them or affected their lives forever. Baby Suggs is a very inspiring character in Beloved. She has a very warm heart and wants her family to enjoy their new freedom. They accepted her into the community around 124, until she was betrayed. She then sinks into a deep depression. Morrison describes it this way: “Her past was like her present – intolerable – and since she knew that death was anything but forgiveness, she used what little energy she had left to think about color. » (4) She always asked Sethe for lavender and pink.
