It is a custom to remember ancestors. As mentioned above, Hindus believe that the deceased will return to earth if they are not given a proper sendoff, the same goes if they are not properly worshipped. The method of ancestor worship is based on sending the dead to heaven and ultimately their rebirth. “The dead only remain in the status of ancestors for three generations, then they progress to the rather vague groups of celestial creatures… The three generations of the deceased form a scale with increasing status, but decreasing proximity to the survivors” ( Michaels 145). ). Ritual worship of ancestors takes place at regular intervals. Most often, we pray daily for deceased loved ones. “In some ways, they are even more dangerous than the gods: they are closer to home, they are dissatisfied, they always demand respect,” notes Michaels on page 146.
