    Otto Dix - Portrait of Dr. Heinrich Stadelmann During my trip to the Art Gallery of Ontario, I discovered that there was one painting that stood out certainly and which made a unique impression on me, it was certainly a painting different from the rest of the gallery. When my eyes met those of Otto Dix's portrait of Dr. Heinrich, I was deeply intrigued and found myself drawn to the work and inspected it the longest of all the painting options I have seen at the AGO.Dix was a painter and printmaker who created the portrait "Dr. Heinrich Stadelmann" in 1922. The plaque next to the painting explained how Dix painted this work just after the First World War. It was one of the pivotal periods in history that brought about the “Roaring Twenties.” It was both a time of joyful and unrestrained celebration, but also marked by violence, poverty and corruption generated by the dire political and economic situation, which is very evident in this painting. Otto Dix must have been motivated by this uglier side of the situation at the time and approached this piece in an earnest and unapologetic manner. Dix's chose to use oil paints on canvas when approaching this piece, which allowed him to explore a variety of techniques, particularly apparent in expression, style, color palette , contrast and textures manipulated throughout Dr. Heinrich Stadelman's painting. In the portrait, Dix depicts a rather miserable old man. Dix paints Dr. Heinrich Stadelman's body language and facial expression in a distinct and interesting way.
