Music is a major form of media that everyone is exposed to from a young age. It is also a form of media that can have profound effects on the way we think, act, and even feel. An example of this would be some of the studies that have shown a correlation between people who listen to heavy metal music and mental illnesses such as ADHD or depression. This isn't a causal relationship, though, which is probably a good thing considering that's actually the type of music I listen to most often. In my daily life, as I get to know someone on a deeper level, I usually ask about things they like. One of the most common questions that I end up talking about in more detail is the type of music. Most of the time, when I listen to music very intensely, I satisfy my needs without tension. Music serves as a distraction and relaxation tool, especially if things aren't going very well for me at the time. The next need that is met most frequently would be my emotional needs. For me, this need is pretty closely related to my Tension Free needs. When I'm in a bad mood, for example, my performance in a number of areas decreases, but listening to music sometimes puts me in a better mood, which can also increase my performance in those same areas. My last two needs met are met with approximately the same frequency. These needs are for personal and social integration. For as long as I can remember, I've had pretty low self-esteem in anything that doesn't involve shooting three-pointers in basketball. As a result, I am always looking for ways to increase my self-esteem. One of these ways is to listen to music. Listening to music makes me realize that everything will be okay, which calms me down, allowing me to focus more intently on the tasks at hand. By focusing more on each task, my performance in those tasks increases a bit, which slowly increases my self-esteem. The last need that is satisfied for me is social integration. I have just started to realize that this need is satisfied by listening to music. Going to The Salt Company every Thursday night, I find myself in a situation where about a thousand students are all singing the same songs at the same time. Singing all at once, especially with passion, is a great way to connect with others. It shows that you have similar interests and are passionate about something
