  • Essay / Stress Survival Kit - 1349

Do you know stress? It was my middle name. Compiled from all the expectations I felt and assumed as a young adult. It started much younger, around the age of three. And by the time I got to college, I felt like a failure; a “success seeker”. I was already carrying a large baggage filled with all the things I had missed in my young life. And now it was time to embrace all the pressure needed to get a 4.0 GPA, make new friends, and position myself for success in my career, which was my goal for finishing college. The type and level of stress students face today was very different. I had to make sure I got to the library before it closed to write my dissertation on the IBM Selectric. No computers or laptops were accessible. It was the Dark Ages; I started college in 1977, a few years before I touched my first personal computer. I wasn't distracted by a cell phone ringing, someone texting me, or the pressure of catching up with everyone on Facebook. I just had the distractions of my own mind and a very poor ability to concentrate. I was easily distracted when trying to study, sleep, or have a conversation. Much of the distraction had to do with my own lack of confidence in my abilities to measure up and perform at the level expected by my teachers and parents. My specialty was accounting; my minor, voice. Bookkeeping was a breeze for me in high school and I grew up singing; the choice was obvious. Plus, even before starting college, all I had heard was that you had to get your MBA to be successful and get into the most expensive jobs and top companies. College was a necessary means to an end and with my middle of paper......you are all caught in a chronic cycle that you are convinced you cannot break from. Stress leads to illness, stress makes our body's internal chemistry acidic and this internal acidity is linked to cancer. Unfortunately, some people thrive on stress.
