  • Essay / Lottery Themes and Symbolism By Shirley Jackson

The lottery is the symbol of luck. however, in the story, luck is ironically opposite. usually the winner of the lottery will receive a prize and celebrate the lucky event, but it is horrifying for the one who is "lucky" to get the winning ticket in the story. Every villager, including Mr. Summer and Mr. Grave, who are the most powerful people in the village, must participate in the lottery where everyone will have the same chance of being a victim. This is why the name of the ritual is a symbolism as well as the irony of the whole story which upsets many readers because the ending is nothing like them.
