  • Essay / Sula by Toni Morrison - Breaking the Rules - 918

Breaking the Rules in SulaA community separates itself from other individuals in a given society. Some communities have their own distinct rules or laws. It brings together a number of people into one group, one way of thinking. Many communities come together because they share the same common goal or interests. Sometimes a group or community forms when one person is different from the majority. A good example would be when a child is teased at school for wearing glasses or braces. Toni Morrison's Sula tells the story of a woman whose individuality brings a small Ohio town together to side against her. The novel Sula raises the question of how people or communities come together. In Sula's case, her abandonment of the city placed her in the position of an outcast. Sula's community considers her carefree and wild ways to be obscene and inappropriate. A good example would be his need for many sexual partners. Sula sleeps with many men in her town, whether they are married or not. "It was the only place where she could find what she was looking for: misery and the capacity to feel deep sorrow. Making love seemed, at first, to her the creation of a special kind of joy." (122) Her community believes that a good woman of her age should be a mother, a wife and a servant to her household. A woman should stay at home and be respectful and respectful. Sula was none of these things. From the beginning, she has always been different, she preferred to do what she loves to do. She went off to college, something most people in her town rarely did. Sula left to pursue a career and fulfill her need for knowledge. She wanted to do everything to see everything and experienced as many experiences as she could get while she was still young. It was strange to see the town come together when Sula returned from college. Suddenly, the townspeople began to side with the others against Sula. They began to view Sula as a weirdo, a devil, as one lady described her, comparing Sula to the town outcast named Shadrack. The city began to take care of each other while trying to take care of itself..
