Essay / Lessons from Little Rock by Terrence Roberts, A Brief...
I really enjoyed reading this book and following the interesting and inspiring life of its author, Terrence Roberts. The lessons Roberts presents are mostly organized chronologically in the book, beginning with the Crystal Burger incident and ending with events from his experience as a professor at UCLA. Each chapter contains one or more lessons, drawn from his life experiences and comments, with invaluable insights in each. In Chapter 14, “Lessons from Barber Shop and Lawn Mowing Customers,” Roberts explains how his childhood business, when he was enrolled in Dunbar, was negatively impacted when it became known that Terrence was a member of the Little Rock Nine. Almost all of Terrence's clients were white, and he noted that "as long as he presented himself as someone who would work hard and stay within the bounds of socially prescribed behavior," he would be able to work as much as he needed. would like. (133). However, when it emerged that Terrence was a member of the Little Rock Nine, and therefore a rebel, he discovered that many of his clients, including "one woman in particular, Mrs. Montgomery...could not, in good conscience, hire an employee.” black person who nourished the idea of being his equal” (134). Next, Roberts provides an intriguing counterexample by speaking of his "Uncle Leady, returning from a stint in the Korean War" (134). During a visit to the same white woman, Mrs. Montgomery, “he insisted that he be allowed in through the front door,” which was usually reserved for whites only, but “she had agreed” (134 ). I think the reason Roberts is hosting this event is to teach us two main lessons about people and about change. I believe the first lesson he teaches has a lot to do with the way he describes......in the middle of a sheet......" and that this is personally a motivating factor for him The lesson that Roberts states can again be divided into two parts. In fact, the first is not about racial discrimination, but rather about perseverance. Literally akin to a war zone, with soldiers and belligerents, he delivers an excellent report card. In doing so, he teaches us that hard work, determination and focus are what will ultimately lead you to success. Finally, Roberts. teaches us that we must discuss our shortcomings in any area in order to overcome them. Furthermore, it implies that liberal attitudes can be very contagious and that dialogue and acknowledgment of the past are necessary to achieve goals. individually or collectively.
