There are an ever-increasing number of computer users today. However, even age-old desktop computers are being replaced by smartphones. These smartphones have the ability to collect information about users, such as their location, and sell it to marketers. Yet with the increase in information and technology available to us, the idea that we are losing our individualism is increasing. The increase in information begins to leave our subconscious susceptible to control by the powerful. Some major retail outlets are starting to collect personal information about people, tricking their customers into signing up for cards that offer customers small incentives to swipe them every time they shop. items at their checkout. In America, this is starting to take its toll, such as when a young girl began receiving pregnancy pamphlets mailed from Walmart. This shows how we are reduced to statistics and numbers rather than our personal traits. Individuality is the attitude of an individual that distinguishes him or her from others. However, our reliance on media strips us of our individualism, leaving us susceptible to control by the powerful. Individuality is lost because the human brain becomes largely dependent on information provided by technology for decision-making. However, as we become more and more glued to our phones and computers, we need to ask ourselves questions. Is this our future?
