  • Essay / The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost - 1005

Throughout our daily lives and life in general, we are often faced with many important decisions, decisions that can, and often do, determine an unforeseen future . The choices, some almost identical, lead to different destinies and sometimes leave us wondering “what if?” ". There will almost never be signs showing us the path to take or the choice to make, much less the right choice to make; we must discover what awaits us. In the poem "The Road Not Taken", the author Robert Frost tells us, the reader, about such a choice in a symbolic way representing perhaps any major life decision. The traveler in Frost's poem must choose blindly between two very similar paths, and this decision greatly affects his future life and perhaps leaves him continually wondering what possibilities the other choice might have offered him. “The Road Not Taken” is written in the story and the poem consists of four stanzas. It is considered one of Frost's most popular works and one of the most discussed. There are many interpretations of this poem, but Robert Frost himself explained that the inspiration came from his close friend Edward Thomas, another poet, whom he met in England around 1912. It is said that the poem was a gentle teasing of indecision, notably the indecision Thomas had shown during their many walks together in England and the regret he would have towards the path they had chosen. It is said that Robert even mentioned to Thomas: “No matter which path you take, you will always sigh and wish you took another” (website). I believe it is also a tease of human behavior, the dissatisfaction and curiosity of humanity on some level, and also sheds light on the ending......at middle of paper ......e always in mind. Symbolizing the power of many possibilities and circumstances in life is the fact that the decision made between two paths, which initially seemed so equal, can and will make all the difference. We come to the conclusion that the “path” actually leads to a path and that there is usually no turning back. Even though one life path that may seem very similar to another still has subtle differences that usually lead to different outcomes. Humans live with uncertainty, which makes it difficult for an individual to be completely satisfied with the path they choose to follow in life. Even though an individual may gain many opportunities along the way, the fact is that he will never know what might have happened if he had chosen the other route and will never know what he might have missed out on. along life's journey, always leaving him wondering. from “The Road Not Taken”.
