  • Essay / Analysis of the Cherry Orchard - 1138

Cedra WilsonRobyn NoltingTHEA 161March 24, 2014Response Document The Cherry OrchardThe Cherry Orchard describes the life of a group of Russians, following the liberation of slaves. The action takes place over five or six months, but the characters' stories are so complex that in many ways the play begins years earlier. The actor I chose to write about was Yermolai Alexseyevich (played by Erin Despanie), he is the other main character in The Cherry Orchard. In my opinion, his character was dramatic and he easily caught my attention as soon as he appeared in the scene. He is awakened by memories, in the first moments on stage, he recounts a time when his ancestor exhausted him, "His father and his grandfather were serfs who drank their whole lives in the cherry orchard and mistreated him" but his short response was also linked to Madame Ranevskaya's subsequent affection for him who managed to use freedom from slavery to his full advantage and is now a wealthy landowner and shrewd businessman. Erin was the most animated and passionate character. The ambiguity of his character is precisely what makes him, and all the other characters in the play, so fascinating to me. Yermolai, a childhood friend of Madame Ranevsky, who becomes a Savoyard businessman trying to save "La Cerisaie", designs a business plan without knowing what will happen. Although he was born into a slave family, the class change Yermolai experienced during his life is astonishing; At the end of his paycheck he is not only a rich man, but he also owns the estate where he was born. He is a symbolic character insofar as he sheds light on the possible success of the newly released. However, while his bank account makes him... middle of paper ...... a dynamic talent, his portrayal of a distinguished businessman who attributes himself, money connoisseur and his brand when it comes to finances , which completely overcomes the poverty into which he was born was excellent. Although his betrayal of Yermolai was great, there were a few moments in the play that I thought he overacted, but his overall performance was wonderful? It was almost unrecognizable. The actors in the play were so prepared that there were almost no noticeable mistakes. For a while, I wasn't clear on what exactly was happening in the second act. The transition while they were talking in the orchard just seems a little confusing and somewhat disjointed. I think this has little to do with the direction of the game. The ending, however, gave me a better understanding of each act, but this whole play was enjoyable and a play I could watch again..
