Abortion is a controversial subject in today's world. Some believe that removing the right to abortion is tantamount to removing the rights of the mother. On the other hand, people view abortion as the innocent killing of a human being. (p.31Opposing Views) The Roe v. Wade case declared the procedure a "fundamental right" on January 22, 1973 (p.7RoeW.Wade) The mother has the right to choose what is best for her baby. Abortion is justified because it might be in the best interest of the family (p. 103Opposing Views). We all agree that no woman should be forced to become a mother. A baby should not come into the world unwanted. (Procon.org) 49% of all babies are born unwanted. (Procon.org) Rates of abuse are higher for unwanted children. If a child feels unwanted or neglected, then they may become involved in illegal or dangerous activities. Parents' lack of love can push them to associate with negative groups of people. All children should be raised in a financially stable home. If parents are unable to financially support their child, they may feel like they are unfit parents. (Procon.org)They claim that pregnant women will end up with illegal abortions if no legal options are allowed. (Prochoice.org)Having a child is an important lifelong decision that requires planning and preparation. Personhood begins at birth, not at conception. (Procon.org) Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, not a baby. (Procon.org)A child is not fully developed until the third trimester of pregnancy. Abortion is a personal and private decision for both parents. Bringing a baby with serious or life-threatening problems to term is too much for some families to handle. The right to abortion gives parents the ability to make decisions regarding their religious beliefs. The sixth commandment says: “Thou shalt not kill.” (Procon.org) Is abortion more easily accepted if one is a victim of rape, or are there justifications? No one should be forced to be a mother.
