“Ethics… is nothing other than respect for life. This is what gives me the fundamental principle of morality, that good is to maintain, promote, and improve life, and that destroying, injuring, and limiting life is evil. This definition of ethics comes from the German doctor, theologian and medical missionary Albert Schweitzer, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 19521. Ethics are the principles that govern the behavior of society. It is a topic of discussion that affects all humanity, regardless of age, race or generation. Essentially, it is the guide by which individuals determine right from wrong. Several professions have developed codes of ethics that define the expected behavior of their cohorts. The pharmacists’ code of ethics explains the pharmacist’s duty towards the patient and the profession2. It covers topics such as integrity, truth, justice, beneficence, non-malevolence, altruism and autonomy.
